Our understanding of them is still in its early stages and empirical research in the field of globalization of high arts is still scarce.

This book brings together recent, multidisciplinary, cutting edge research on the globalization of art markets. Focusing on different regions, including China, Russia, India and Japan, as well as different institutions and organizations, the chapters in this volume study the extent to which art markets indeed become global. They show the various barriers to, and the effects of, globalization on the art market's organizational dynamics and the everyday narratives of people working within the art industry. In doing so, they recognize the coexistence of various ecologies of contemporary art exchange, and sketch the presence of resilient local networks of actors and organizations. Some chapters show Europe and the US continue to dominate, especially when taking art market rankings and the most powerful events such as Art Basel into account. However, other chapters argue that things such as art fairs are truly global events and that the 'architecture of the art market' which has originally been developed in Europe and the US from the 19th century onwards, is increasingly adopted across the world.

Olav Velthuis, Associate Professor, University of Amsterdam,Stefano Baia Curioni, Associate Professor, Bocconi University

Olav Velthuis is Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the University of Amsterdam. He is currently studying the emergence and development of art markets in the BRIC-countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China). Velthuis is the author of Imaginary Economics (NAi Publishers, 2005) and Talking Prices. Symbolic Meanings of Prices on the Market for Contemporary Art (Princeton University Press, 2005), which received the Viviana Zelizer Distinguished Book Award of the American Sociological Association for the best book in economic sociology (2006). Together with Maria Lind of Tensta Konsthall (Stockholm), he recently edited the book Contemporary Art and Its Commercial Markets A Report on Current Conditions and Future Scenarios (Sternberg Press, 2012). A recognized authority on art markets, his journalistic writings have appeared in among others Artforum, the Art Newspaper and the Financial Times.

Stefano Baia Curioni is Associate Professor at the Department of Institutional Analysis of Bocconi University in Milano. He is founder, former Director and vice President of the ASK (Art, Science, Knowledge) research center of Bocconi University, visiting professor of cultural economics at IMT institute Lucca for the Phd Heritage management and development. In the last fifteen years Baia Curioni concentrated his research and teaching activities in the field of cultural institutions and policies with a specific interest in the historical analysis of the transformation of art system and fields. His last book, Mercanti dell'Opera, is dedicated to the economic history of Italian Operatic music scene in the XIX and XX century. Within the ASK research center, Baia Curioni is leading a research project on the contemporary art legitimation processes and served the Italian Ministry of Culture for different intervention in the last years. Great boo, love shaodwrun, PDF's are nice but there is still nothing like a REAL book in your hands. Great artwork, and lots of "new" , most of the vehicles we've seen in past editions NOT in the 5.0 core book, but no Citymaster :( , drones and vehicles.

I was surprised with the updated material. Some classic names but then new stuff also. New basic commuter stuff and more security vehicles also. The only down side is some the text was fuzzy and hard to read.

This was the first book I have read under the 5th edition umbrella. I played Shadowrun a great deal 20 years ago and in the last couple years I have purchased 5-6 4th edition books. I was wary of the 5th edition due to reviews here and on other sites but I wanted to try a book to see what I thought. I had started with the rigger's book because it was a character type I had always enjoyed so I figured that if I didn't like the 5th edition material at least I would have a decent book to read. Sadly I was quite wrong. Not having seen the 5th edition rule book I can't say if this is written in the tone of the new edition or if this book just didn't do it for me but I didn't even finish it.The impression that I got reading the first section was that every fourth word was "rigger," which made for a difficult and almost painful read. Obviously that's the character type that will be in the book but it seemed to make it read like it was written by someone that didn't quite get it, someone that didn't know the Shadowrun world. The 4th edition sourcebooks, written as threads from online forums, had a style that seemed to capture the style and setting of the game. I felt like this book came from someone that was told about that style but couldn't quite capture the same feel.As far as print quality, the whole book was in color on glossy pages. The first page on each of the chapter introduction stories was printed much less clearly than the other pages, some to the point of being difficult to read due to the blurry quality of the letters.I didn't finish the book, and I'm quite sure I won't ever, so I may have missed out on bits that would have made it a good purchase. I think I'm going to just move on from this one and never go back to see what I missed the first time through.

Only the Water Pik shower massage gets more kudos from Friday's respondents in this sequel to My Secret Garden (1973)--though dogs come in for considerable praise. Friday reports that, while this project was underway, a friend asked her whether she was writing ``another of your masturbatory books, Nancy.'' Friday was affronted, believing that her books open up discourse on taboo subjects, break new ground in exposing the inner lives of half of the human race, help people feel they're normal, promote understanding between the sexes, etc. And perhaps they do--but it cannot be denied that fully 75% of this book consists of women's first-person X-rated fantasies. Friday's role as commentator on the fantasies may prompt irreverent associations with the impassive, analytical doctors once used to introduce porn films and lend them an air of legitimacy. Her conclusions are: that the generation of women now in their 20s are less abashed about their sexuality than the women in My Secret Garden; that they are comfortable with masturbation; relish their power rather than seek to be overpowered by a man; and sometimes are so angry and fed up with men that they turn to other women.
