I've been teaching myself French for quite awhile now using a free online site. I thought I could better my "exposure" and understanding of the language if I read a book I'm quite familiar with that has been translated into French. I haven't had the book long and I've already reached the point when Harry gets his Nimbus 2000 from McGonagall. I do think it a bit funny what some of the names have been translated to, and wonder why some changed but others didn't. Google Translate works well if I can't figure out what character is being referenced or is speaking, as well as figuring out certain sentences. I'm acutally understanding a lot more than I thought I would. It's been great so far. I hope to get the audio CD soon and follow along with the narrator. I don't know if the book is abridged or not, but it's still worth owning for the French practice.

I am always going to love Harry Potter. I got the first book in French to see if I was able to understand/remember any of it since I studied French in High School and College. I was able to understand about 25-30% without having to refer to the English version or a dictionary. I found it interesting that the names of some characters, the houses, and even the money was different though from the English version and the French Version. I absolutely loved the way that Jean François-Ménard was able to translate words like "Ravenclaw" (Serdaigle) and "Hogwarts" (Poudlard) and he managed to keep the original meaning of most, if not all, words.

Fantastic! I listen tomHarry Potter regularly in English as I go off to sleep... So I decided it was time to try to relearn my French. And what better way than with Harry Potter! I was concerned that there was only a single disc (compared to seven for the English version) but it's all there on a single MP3 and plays perfectly on my Bose Wave Radio/CD player. I recommend it to anyone who wants a French language version.

This was the second book I read during my French studies and I loved it. I watched all the movies and so that helps me know that I'm on track in the plot. Totally doable for an advanced beginner or lower intermediate learner. I recommend checking our Olly Richards book on French short stories for an explanation on how to read as a beginning language learner. Once you get the hang of it, it's such fun!
