This book is a masterpiece. As the simple title implies, this massive volume contains just about everything known about lasers up to the 1980s. One would think though, that such an ambitious text would inevitably leave certain subjects under-developed, but every page of the book emanates the care Siegman took in carefully thinking through each explanation and derivation to teach the reader. As one reads through the text chapter by chapter, the book also incorporates the modern (as of the 1980s, but much is still relevant) context of parameters and physics being discussed. For example, every section in the chapter on amplification cites the real measurements and performance of Nd:Glass, Ti:Sapph etc. gain mediums to really cement what the alphas and lambdas mean in reality. The meat of the exposition is superb, as Siegman's approach is to not only explain each concept thoroughly as they are introduced, but then double back towards the end of the chapter to insert his own personal insights and interpretations that are always illuminating. The book is so well done, he even writes a few sentences about the references included at the end of each section. It's a shame that Siegman passed away, since in the 30 years after its publication the field of lasers has advanced by leaps and bounds. I wouldn't trust anyone else to add to Siegman's book though, since his writing was truly one of a kind.

Most undergraduate and graduate classes use this book and it is an absolutely amazingly well-written book. I remember as an undergrad. this book was a little confusing but now with more experience in the field of laser and optics I see why this book is so highly regarded. The book hasn't been updated so its missing some more recent topics in lasers but it is still an amazing book. Check out Silfvast and Demtroder for other books that are also well written and offer some expounding on some topics that this book is weak on.

The author has a real talent for explaining. The book is surprisingly well written for a scientific reference book. Years after I followed the class where this book was used, it still sits on my shelf and I refer to it regularly for my work.

This remarkable text is a wonderful introduction to the world of lasers, especially good for undergraduate courses, particularly for engineers.The basic principles and practice are explained with extraordinary clarity, and without any significant mention of quantum mechanics. The main weakness of the book is the lack of information on semiconductor laser diodes - so central these days to many branches of laser engineering.For those wanting a more advanced undergraduate - or physics-based text - an excellent complementary text to Siegman's is Orazio Svelto's 'Principles of Lasers'.Siegman's book is an excellent engineering text - a terrific introduction for anybody who is new to lasers.

It is a great test book for one to have if they want to learn about lasers. It goes thru every detail, it is a lot of information to digest but Seigman puts it better then anyone else that I know of. Many other physics and laser text books quote Seigman's Lasers, so why not get the source that everyone trusts?

I've been a fan of Kristin Cavallari since Laguna Beach and later on, The Hills. Of course, Hollywood portrayed her as, well...not a nice person but I never truly believed that she was like that in real life. Over the last few years, I've become an even bigger fan of her since she became a mom and have the utmost respect for everything I've read about her (I have seen some of her status updates on social media sites). Last night, I saw that she released a book and I immediately purchased it. Since I am a mom as well and am also looking for ways to create a healthier lifestyle, I had no problem splurging on this book.As soon as I started this book, I was hooked! I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning reading it because I love the topics covered in this book and the style in which it is written. I would describe this book as mostly a self-help guide with elements of an autobiography since she writes about herself, a bit of how she grew up and how she came to be the person she is now. For anyone looking for lots of gossip on reality TV and what really happened on Laguna Beach and The Hills, this isn't that kind of book. Yes, there are some parts where Kristin Cavallari gives readers information on what actually happened but it's mostly used to show how she decided to change herself to become who she was meant to be. In this book, she often reflects on who she used to be and looks at how far she has come. All in all, she is shown to be a very real person.Balancing in Heels is written in a very positive, encouraging way and I couldn't stop from smiling because I just felt so happy reading this book! The book is divided into chapters on topics such as becoming a mother and wife, eating healthy, working out, and fashion. Kristin Cavallari writes about what works well for her and even provides examples on what she does to make sure her family eats healthy, "real" food and exercises. I learned quite a bit from this book and already this morning, I've been checking nutrition labels to happily discover some of the foods she says are very clean are already ones that I regularly keep in the house! She ends each chapter with a summary called "Balancing it All" to reinforce her main points. She even includes several recipes at the end of the book in case you want to try some of her favorites and I'll admit, most of them sound pretty tasty.I loved this book, which probably had something to do with the fact that I already knew who Kristin Cavallari was, but this book would appeal to anyone, regardless of if you know who she is or not. Balancing in Heels talks about how she is happy with who she is and breaks down what she does to stay happy and healthy. I already plan on incorporating some of her tips into my lifestyle. The only thing I regret is purchasing this book on my Kindle Paperwhite because the screen is smaller than some of the other Kindles and some of the pictures and charts on the screen of the Paperwhite aren't as easy to see. Since I plan to use this as a reference, I am going to bite the bullet and purchase a paperback copy as well. If you are either a fan of Kristin Cavallari or are looking for a good, positive book to help encourage a healthier lifestyle, I highly recommend this one and hope she writes more books in the future!

Pretty disappointing. Seemed random jumping from high school and advice and then random recipes. Not what I had hoped for.

I’m sorry... I was hoping for more like Tori Spellings writing... this is awful... and I really like Kristen... but it’s just a no for me... probley won’t read anything else by her

A quick read, but I love it. I appreciate how honest Kristin Cavallari is and she emphasizes that situations are different for everyone, but explains where she's coming from with her decisions and how they've helped her in her life. I also appreciate the start of her book, which talks about her life on Laguna Beach & The Hills. She doesn't make excuses for her life, but explains how things were easily skewed to the public for the sake of show ratings. I appreciate Cavallari's honest approach to growing up and found it inspirational in the sense that it's okay to grow up at your own rate and that everyone eventually gets there.

I REALLY REALLY wanted to love this book but I just can't. While it is no doubt written by Kristen, she isn't really telling her story - she is kind of just giving a rough outline of her day to days, her marriage, her kids and how she is balancing it. There isn't a lot of meat to the book but there are a lot of pictures. I love her dearly and loved her on Laguna (real or not) but this book was disappointing. Its just meh and really didn't give me any information that I didn't already know or wouldn't have already assumed from a wife / mother. I finished the book (in 1 day) saying "no duh" to myself.

I really enjoyed the first couple chapters. They gave great advice on how to balance life and love and helped you understand how to keep a relationship healthy. However, by chapter 3 the book was more about how perfect Kristin is. She often contradicts herself saying she was unhealthy as a teenager but that she’d do something now if it wasn’t for the fact that she will “loose too much weight” or “because of her diary intolerance”. Her book makes you feel like she’s just trying to tell you in every way she can that she is beautiful successful and fit. All things we already know by looking at her. Maybe a little more advise and a little less about herself in the next book.

So good! Particularly, I found learning about food and how hidden ingredients effect your body / skin / hair really interesting. Great beauty tips that are realistic and recipes I can't wait to try. Overall, a nice variety of content. Well written. An educational yet easy, entertaining read. Highly recommended!!
